Feng Shui for Writers
A writing loop I'm on ran a bootcamp on staying healthy as a writer, and one of the elements covered was making sure you have a pleasant work environment. Hence, feng shui.

Turns out I may need to make major changes in my writing area, like turning my desk around so it faces the door, which is supposed to make me feel more in charge of my life. Of course, that'd mean I couldn't look out the window at the mountains and the forest, so maybe I'll have to think about that one a little more.

But I'm happy to see I had some things right: the artwork on my walls is stuff I treasure (drawings by my kids and a gorgeous watercolor of a pink cockatoo my artist mom painted), and my writing corner is in the "prosperity" area of my house.

Yep, if I ignore the occasional foosball game four feet from my desk, things are looking good.

How does your writing area make you feel?

  1. My writing area is despicable. It's in my tiny room for one; a room that is so tiny it can barely house my daybed and my dresser. My bookshelf prevents my door from opening up all the way. It's just sad.

With that said, I don't notice myself struggling to write in this environment. I mean, occassionaly, I stare off into space, trying to imagine a scene or dialogue, and I'm distracted: "so that's where my DVD disappeared to..."

I definitely need to try to rearrange some things. I do have a tiny desk, but no chair. *snort* So, I usually just write in bed, which gets uncomfortable.

Cute blog, and very interesting post. I'm following you now, and I found your blog through the thread over at RD. ;) Just so you know I'm not a random stalker. (:

I can write pretty much anywhere as long as there's no TV on. My favorite spot is outside on the deck. Not so much in January, though.

  3. TV is definitely a distraction. What about music? Do you find that it causes you to lose focus? Sometimes I work better with my favorite bands playing, but other times I need silence. My muse is moody like that.

I can't concentrate on writing or editing if I'm listening to music with lyrics. Usually I need quiet so I can focus.

Oh! I love your blog design. I'm thinking of redesigning mine.... so much work! LOL :D

I have a problem with my writing Feng Shui. My computer, my only computer is a desktop and it's in the kitchen for familial use. :( Even when I'm here [to write] I find myself very often distracted. Somehow this year, I am going to expand my writing space. A laptop. A small corner--like my walk-in closet. Something so that if I'm there, people know not to disturb me. :D It just might work!

    Great post.

This blog uses a WordPress template (see the links at the bottom to find the clever people who do that sort of thing).

Having a dedicated writing space is a good thing. Having family members who respect your need for time without distractions is even better (if harder to come by). I'm still trying to figure out how to convince my daughter's new puppy that she should respect my writing time.

  7. LOL, I guess you'd say I was a neat writer...I like a clean area to work in. I like it silent when I'm writing and I love the wee hours of the morning to be my most creative...so I'm up by 3 every morning to do my thing, before the real life begins...with dog, hubby, phones and everything else that happens in life....my writing day ends around 9 or so in the evening. I put in a 16 hour day to my writing career...

    I enjoyed your post Susan!

Oh my gosh, Hawk—that's dedication to your craft. When do you find time to eat? ;-)

  9. Hi,
Just found your blog and so very glad I did. :) I'd love to know what works better on moving that desk. lol, because I have a view of the water and almost went to move the desk to face the door right away, but then read on instead of jumping up and saw the "maybe not" due to your wonderful view. I am leaning towards the view.
    Cheers,
    Theresa
